Meet Nick Dubree, the new director of Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor Inc (PSI). Nick was hired in late May of 2024 and is a disabled veteran and former combat medic originally from Texas. He recently finished a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and administration and is working on a master's in public administration. Nick has experience with various jobs, including working in an oil field, sports medicine, organic farming, and being a bouncer. According to Nick, his experiences have taught him to have empathy for the physical and emotional pain of others.
“Having a disability has led me directly to the work I do today. After developing physical issues, I needed a change, and this led me to get my bachelor’s degree and work with Puerto Seguro," he said. After earning a master’s degree, Nick wants to continue serving nonprofits like PSI.
Nick has many hopes and dreams for PSI:
“I want it to grow. Right now, most of the public awareness is about the meal services we offer at Puerto Seguro, but we are so much more than that. Homelessness is one of the hardest causes to raise money and resources for, but PSI is also an umbrella over multiple other programs…and growing.
"The main Puerto Seguro program is not an overnight shelter; it is a center, a 'drop-in center', or a D.I.C. We are currently developing a DIC for Youth; it will be in the same building as where we have our adult drop-in services, but for young adults and teenagers on different days of the week. It's a separate program. The Safe Harbor Thrift Store is a charity under Puerto Seguro as well, but it's in a different building. It serves the community just as much as the adult drop-in services, but in different ways.
"We are also preparing to open a non-profit bike shop under the umbrella of PSI as well, called Socorro Spokes. We will continue to expand to serve the community."
Welcome to Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor, Nick!
