An open letter from Shay Kelley, the Board Chair of Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor:
Hello again everyone!
While we have secured grants and outside funding for projects like Socorro Spokes, the Saturday Center, and our Warming/Cooling Centers, we are struggling to find and secure funding for our regular services on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The building is provided by the City of Socorro, as well as 9% of our operational budget for these specific services. But 91% of the budget comes from individual donations.
Puerto Seguro is the only drop-in center for unsheltered individuals within a 25,000 square mile area. Our services are vital not only to the city and county of Socorro, but to the surrounding communities as well.
Our current financial situation is pretty dire. We need at least $70,000 to stay open and continue to provide services for the remainder of 2025. This includes the cost of staffing, food, cleaning and kitchen supplies, hygiene supplies, insurance, etc.
By September, we will have used up the last of the Catholic Foundation Grant that allowed us to provide one-time services like rent and utility assistance, hotel rooms, transportation assistance, and help obtaining identifying documents. These services are the lifeline that often keeps people from ending up on the streets. The grant was $1,850/month, but the Catholic Foundation has scaled back its large grant program, and it is no longer available. If we hope to continue to offer these services, we will first need to make sure that Puerto Seguro's drop-in center is fully funded.
I humbly ask that you consider donating, and that you share this email with your circles. We know that times are tough, but without the presence of Puerto Seguro, times would get much tougher for the 10% of Socorroans who utilize our services.
